Used Car Checklist: What to Look For Before You Buy

Updated April 2026

Buying a used car is one of the smartest financial decisions you can make — but only if you inspect it thoroughly before signing. Use this checklist to evaluate any used vehicle like a pro. And when you shop at Mix Cars in Fredericksburg, VA, you get free Carfax reports and a 3-month warranty on every vehicle for extra peace of mind.

Exterior Inspection

  • Body panels — Walk around the entire car and look for dents, scratches, rust spots, and mismatched paint. Uneven panel gaps can indicate previous accident repair.
  • Glass — Check the windshield and all windows for chips, cracks, and pitting. Small chips can spread quickly and are expensive to fix.
  • Tires — Look for even tread wear across all four tires. Uneven wear can signal alignment issues or worn suspension components. Check the tire age (stamped on the sidewall) — tires older than 6 years should be replaced.
  • Lights — Test all headlights, taillights, turn signals, brake lights, and reverse lights. Replacing a modern LED assembly can cost hundreds of dollars.
  • Undercarriage — If possible, look underneath for rust, fluid leaks, exhaust damage, and signs of off-road use or flooding.

Interior Inspection

  • Seats and upholstery — Check for tears, stains, excessive wear, and sagging. Sit in every seat to test comfort and adjustability.
  • Dashboard and controls — Test every button, knob, and switch. Turn on the A/C, heat, radio, power windows, locks, mirrors, and seat adjustments.
  • Infotainment system — Make sure the screen is responsive, Bluetooth pairs correctly, and backup camera works clearly.
  • Odors — A musty or mildew smell can indicate water damage or flooding. Excessive air freshener use may be masking a problem.
  • Trunk and cargo area — Lift the carpet and check for moisture, rust, or signs of water intrusion. Make sure the spare tire and jack are present.

Mechanical Inspection

  • Engine — With the engine cold, check the oil (should be amber, not black or milky), coolant level, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. Look for leaks around gaskets and hoses.
  • Start-up — The engine should start smoothly without hesitation, knocking, or excessive smoke from the exhaust. Blue smoke means oil burning; white smoke can indicate a head gasket issue.
  • Brakes — Check pad thickness if visible through the wheels. Listen for squealing or grinding when braking during your test drive.
  • Suspension — Push down firmly on each corner of the car. It should bounce once and settle — multiple bounces mean worn shocks or struts.
  • Transmission — Shifts should be smooth and timely for automatics. Manual transmissions should engage cleanly without grinding or a slipping clutch.

Test Drive Checklist

  • Steering — The car should track straight on a flat road. Turn the wheel lock-to-lock and listen for clicking or groaning (could indicate CV joint or power steering issues).
  • Braking — Test at various speeds. The car should stop straight without pulling to one side. Feel for pulsation in the pedal (warped rotors).
  • Highway driving — Get up to highway speed and check for vibrations, wind noise, and how the transmission handles passing acceleration.
  • Parking — Test reverse, parking sensors, and backup camera in a parking lot. Make sure visibility is acceptable.
  • Cold start vs. warm — If possible, start the car when the engine is completely cold. Many issues only show up on a cold start.

Vehicle History Check

Never skip the vehicle history report. A Carfax or AutoCheck report will reveal accidents, title issues (salvage, flood, lemon), odometer rollbacks, number of previous owners, and service history. At Mix Cars, we provide a free Carfax report on every vehicle so there are no surprises.

  • Look for a clean title — avoid salvage or rebuilt titles unless you know what you're getting into.
  • Check for consistent service records — regular oil changes and maintenance are a good sign.
  • Verify the odometer reading matches the report.
  • Note the number of previous owners — fewer is generally better.
