What You Pay When Buying a Used Car in Virginia

Published September 6, 2026 · By Mix Cars

The number on the windshield is not the number you write on the check, and nobody enjoys finding that out at the desk. Nothing on a Virginia buyer's order is mysterious once it is laid out, so here is every line, what sets it, and who collects it — whether you buy from us in Fredericksburg, from a dealer in Stafford, or from a lot up in Woodbridge.

The Vehicle Price

Start with the agreed sale price. On our site that is the figure shown on each listing, and everything else is calculated from it. If you are negotiating, negotiate here — it is the line on the order that is genuinely up for discussion. Taxes and state fees are set by statute, not by the dealer.

Virginia Motor Vehicle Sales and Use Tax

Virginia charges a Motor Vehicle Sales and Use Tax of 4.15% of the sale price plus the processing fee, with a minimum of $75. The processing fee is part of the taxable amount, so the tax is figured on the two added together, not on the sticker alone. The minimum only matters on very inexpensive vehicles: when that taxable amount lands under roughly eighteen hundred dollars, 4.15% comes out below $75, and you pay the $75 instead. This tax goes to the Commonwealth, not to the dealer — we collect it and remit it as part of processing your title.

Note that this is separate from the annual personal property tax your city or county bills you on a vehicle you own. That one is not on your buyer's order at all, the rates differ between Fredericksburg, Stafford and Spotsylvania, and your local commissioner of the revenue is the right place to ask about it.

How a Trade-In Affects the Tax

This is the part people most often get wrong, usually because they have bought a car in another state. In many states, a trade-in reduces the amount you are taxed on, so you pay tax only on the difference. Virginia does not work that way: the sales and use tax is calculated on the full purchase price of the vehicle you are buying, and a trade-in does not reduce the taxable amount.

A trade-in still helps you — it reduces what you finance and what you pay out of pocket — it just does not shrink the tax line. Because tax rules change, confirm the current rules with the Virginia DMV before you plan around them, and ask us how your specific trade-in affects your numbers when you are at the desk.

Title and Registration

Two separate things. The title fee covers putting the vehicle in your name. Registration covers your plates and the right to drive it on the road, and the amount depends on the vehicle's weight and on the registration period you choose — heavier vehicles cost more, which is why a cargo van registers for more than a sedan. There are also optional add-ons some buyers choose, like specialty plates.

These amounts get adjusted from time to time, so rather than quote figures that could be stale by the time you read this, check the current fee schedule at dmv.virginia.gov. We handle the paperwork for you, but the money passes straight through to the DMV. You will also need active insurance on the vehicle before it can be registered, so have your agent ready before delivery day.

Temporary Tags

Titling and plates take time to process, and you are not expected to leave the car parked while that happens. A dealer-issued temporary tag lets you drive legally in the meantime, and it has an expiration date printed on it. Your permanent plates are processed through the Virginia DMV and typically arrive within that window. If you finance, Virginia holds the title electronically for your lender until the loan is paid off, so you will not receive a paper title at purchase. If anything is delayed, call us rather than driving on an expired tag — and the DMV site is the place to confirm the current rules on how long temporary tags run.

The Dealer Processing Fee

Virginia requires dealers to disclose processing fees rather than surprising you with them at signing, and we take that seriously: our processing fee is currently $799. It is disclosed in the footer of every page and on every vehicle page. It covers the work of preparing and submitting your title, registration and sales paperwork.

When you compare dealers, compare the price plus the processing fee, not the price alone. These fees vary widely from one Virginia dealer to another, and a lower sticker with a higher fee can end up the more expensive car. Any dealer should tell you their fee before you drive over.

Putting It Together: A Worked Example

Here is the arithmetic on a hypothetical $12,000 vehicle. That figure is not a price from our lot and it is not a typical anything — it is a round number chosen because the math is easy to follow. The lines are the same whether you are buying a commuter car or one of our cargo vans.

  • Sale price: $12,000.00
  • Processing fee: $799.00
  • Taxable amount, price plus fee: $12,799.00
  • Virginia Sales and Use Tax at 4.15%: $531.16
  • Title, registration and tags: set by the DMV, based on the vehicle's weight and your registration period

That is $13,330.16 before the DMV line, and the DMV portion is the only piece you cannot pin down from your kitchen table. The exact figure is on your buyer's order; ask us to walk through it line by line. If you are financing, this total — not the sticker — is what your down payment comes off of and what the loan is written against, which is why a payment estimate based on the sticker alone always looks better than the real one.

What About the Payment Estimates on This Site?

Every monthly figure on our listings is an estimate built on the site's current defaults: 12.9% APR, 60 months and $1,000 down. Those defaults are ours to change, and every estimate carries a footnote with the assumptions behind it. The estimate excludes taxes, tags and title, plus the processing fee wherever that fee is not already shown next to the price. Use them to compare one vehicle against another, not as an offer. Real terms come from a lender after a credit decision — start that at our online application, which is a secure, no-obligation form, or read more on the financing page.

What to Bring

Delivery day goes faster with the right paperwork in hand:

  • A valid driver's license for every buyer named on the title
  • Proof of insurance, or your agent's number so a policy can be bound before you drive off
  • If you are financing: recent pay stubs or other proof of income, and proof of address
  • If you are trading in: the title to the trade, signed by everyone named on it, plus the registration, keys and any payoff information if there is still a loan on it
  • Your down payment, in whatever form you and we agreed on

One Thing That Is Not a Line Item

Every vehicle we sell includes a 3-month warranty at no extra cost, so it never appears as a charge on your order; the warranty page covers what is included. Our Fredericksburg car buying guide goes further on registration and insurance.
